La Vara (2010)
Shot with Canon EOS 5D Mark II and re-edited in Capture one + Photoshop ColorLAB 15 years later.
A traditional Catholic procession of a votive machine dedicated to the Holy Mary dating back 1535 happening every year on August 15h in my hometown of Messina, Sicily. Back then I was an atheist and I was not interested in taking pictures of the actual votive machine but I was very fascinated with the people carrying it around the centre of the city and the spectators of the event. Having left Messina at age 18 I feel very compelled to attend the traditional festivals happening in the city at different times of the year and photographing them. Unfortunately I have been in Messina less and less but I would love to photograph it once again. I feel like I can never take the same photo at these festivals because of the sheer mass of diverse people but it also feels like throughout the years I have been taking the same photo over and over again because everything is traditional and repeating year in and out and faces seem to have so much in common.
